The Level Playing Field: 25% Weighting

The NSW Department of Education has updated the test structure to ensure a fairer assessment of a student's overall abilities. The test is divided into four equal parts, with each subject now contributing exactly 25% to the final score.

To secure a top band placement, students can no longer rely on just one strong subject. They must demonstrate a balanced aptitude across all four areas, managed entirely through the digital Janison testing platform.

Mathematical Reasoning

It is not enough to just know times tables. This section tests a student's ability to apply mathematical knowledge to unfamiliar, multi-step word problems under extreme time pressure. Calculators are not permitted.

Thinking Skills

Replacing the old General Ability test, this challenging section assesses raw logic. Students must evaluate complex arguments, solve deductive "knights and knaves" puzzles, and demonstrate high-level spatial reasoning.

Reading

Students are presented with a variety of texts, from non-fiction articles to complex poetry. The focus is on reading between the lines, understanding authorial tone, and navigating multi-part "cloze" passages on a digital screen.

Writing

Now carrying a massive 25% weighting, the writing test requires students to type a narrative, persuasive, or discursive response to a surprise prompt. Success requires quick planning, emotional intelligence, and a typing speed of roughly 30-35 words per minute.

Master the Computer-Based Format

Because the Selective Test is entirely digital, practising on paper puts students at a disadvantage. They need to build "screen stamina."

GoTestPrep provides a hyper-realistic simulation of the actual exam environment.

  • 80 Full, Timed Mock Exams: Built to match the exact difficulty and style of the real test.
  • Detailed Analytics: Instantly identify if your child is losing time on spatial reasoning or dropping marks in fractions.
  • Comprehensive Solutions: We don't just give you the final score. We provide step-by-step logic for all 2,500+ questions so your child actually learns from their mistakes.
