Why is Thinking Skills So Difficult?

The Thinking Skills section replaced the old "General Ability" test to stop students from simply memorising dictionary definitions or rote-learning mathematical formulas. It is designed to test raw aptitude, critical thinking, and how fast a student's brain processes new logic under extreme pressure.

In the official exam, students face 40 questions and have just 40 minutes to complete them. That leaves exactly one minute per question to read complex arguments, fold 3D shapes in their head, and deduce the correct answer from four options.

Because this subject isn't explicitly taught in the standard NSW primary school curriculum, it is often the area where students struggle the most—and where targeted practice makes the biggest difference.

What Our Thinking Skills Practice Covers

Aligned with the official NSW Selective format

Our platform doesn't just give you random brain teasers. Our questions are reverse-engineered from the official NSW syllabus (2026 official format). When your child practises with GoTestPrep, they will master the exact question types they will face on exam day:

  • Evaluating Arguments

Identifying statements that most strengthen or weaken a specific claim.

  • Deductive Logic & Flaws

Evaluating "If... then" statements, identifying knights and knaves, and spotting the mistake in a character's reasoning.

  • Spatial Reasoning

Visualising how 2D nets fold into 3D shapes, mentally rotating digital displays, and combining puzzle pieces.

  • Sequencing and Ordering

Solving complex word problems involving ages, race finishing orders, and overlapping schedules.

  • Data Interpretation

Extracting the right logic from tables, schedules, and graphs to find minimum scores or cheapest combinations.

See How We Teach: A Sample Solution

Unlike basic mock tests that just give you an answer key, GoTestPrep provides in-depth, step-by-step solutions for every single question. Here is an example based on the official test format:

The Question

The children Anita, Brian, Eric, Lee and Zara are all in one family. Lee is 1 year younger than Eric. Brian and Eric are twins. Anita is 3 years older than Lee. Brian is 8 years old. Zara is older than Eric, but younger than Anita. Which sentence is true?

A) Eric is 11.
B) Anita is 2 years older than Zara.
C) All the children are 8 or older.
D) Anita is 10.

The GoTestPrep Solution

Don't try to guess; build a quick list based on the concrete facts provided.

  • We know Brian is 8.
  • Since Brian and Eric are twins, Eric is also 8. (This immediately proves Option A is false).
  • Lee is 1 year younger than Eric, making Lee 7. (This proves Option C is false, as Lee is under 8).
  • Anita is 3 years older than Lee (7 + 3), making Anita 10.
  • Zara is older than Eric (8) but younger than Anita (10), making Zara 9.
  • Now check the remaining options. Is Anita (10) 2 years older than Zara (9)? No, she is 1 year older. Therefore, Option B is false. The correct answer is D: Anita is 10.

"Our son was struggling with time management in the thinking skills section. After a few weeks on GoTestPrep, his speed and accuracy improved. The platform is easy to use and the support team is responsive."
