Aligned with the official NSW OC Placement Test format
The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test is fully computer-based and evaluates your child's aptitude across three subject areas. Understanding exactly what is tested—and how each section works—is the first step to scoring in the top band for OC entry in 2028.
The NSW OC Placement Test is a three-subject, computer-based exam administered by the NSW Department of Education. Students in Year 4 sit the test to compete for selective Opportunity Class placement in Year 5.
Each subject carries equal weighting of 33.3% toward the final scaled score. Reading is 14 questions in 40 minutes (note: 3 questions have multiple parts), Mathematical Reasoning is 35 questions in 40 minutes, and Thinking Skills is 30 questions in 30 minutes. To secure a top placement, students must perform consistently across all three sections. All testing takes place through the online NSW exam platform, so building screen comfort before exam day is essential.
